Planet Dog
Book Review:

I just got a copy of a great new dog book that is being published this November. It is Planet Dog: A Doglopedia
, by Sandra and Harry Choron.
I must say, I really love this book. Even though I think I know a lot about dogs, there is a lot in this book that I did not know. It covers everything, history, facts, tips, stories, training, dog care, and more. It is all put together in a very entertaining way, with lots of top 10 (or top 5 or top 20) lists, short stories, and interesting facts. It is also peppered with cute sayings and quotes about dogs.
I have not read the whole book yet, because it is so packed with information, that it is the kind of book you have to read in short sessions. It is the kind of book that you can pick up when you feel like reading a few fun things about dogs or looking something up.
Not that it is all “fun” stuff. There is some sad stuff as well. I remember skipping over a section because was really sad (I have forgotten now what it was - I tend to put sad stuff out of my mind.) But for the most part, it is fun and entertaining.
Just opening the book now, I found something of interest from “Breeds to Match Your Personality Type”. It says that type A humans (impatient, stressed, driven types) usually do better with type B dogs, and type B humans (laid-back, easygoing types) usually do better with type A dogs. Here are the dogs listed:
Type A Dogs (for Type B Humans):
Airedale
Belgian Sheepdog
Border Collie
Brittany
Cairn Terrier
Collie
Dalmatian
Fox Terrier
Irish Terrier
Jack Russell Terrier
Siberian Husky
Springer Spaniel
West Highland White Terrier
Whippet
Yorkshire TerrierType B Dogs (for Type A Humans):
Basset Hound
Bloodhound
Boston Terrier
Bulldog
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Clumber Spaniel
French Bulldog
Great Dane
Great Pyrenees
Irish Wolfhound
Newfoundland
Pekingese
Pomeranian
Pug
Saint Bernard
Speaking of dog breeds, there is a section which lists the 50 most popular dog breeds in the U.S. and some of their characteristics. There are also various lists, like the 45 best dogs for allergy sufferers, 34 dogs for couch potatoes, and even the 10 best “date bait” breeds!
In the history section, there are famous Civil War dogs, World War II dogs, dogs in space, and much more.
There are tips to help you socialize your puppy, how to teach basic commands, dog food, how to choose a pet sitter, and how to photograph your puppy.
As I said, this is just scratching the surface. There is so much in this book. There is bound to be something for anyone who loves dogs!
