Can the Dog Whisperer’s Techniques Work For You?
The Dog Whisperer (starring Caesar Milan) is one of my favorite shows. It is on the National Geographic Channel on Fridays. Recently, they have started showing the newest shows on Monday, but the reruns are still on Friday. My dog likes the show too. She sits on the couch at attention through the whole thing.
I have had only limited success in implementing the Dog Whisperer’s techniques though. That’s why I was really interested to read Emily Yoffe’s experiences with Ceasar Millan’s techniques.
It is really a funny article. She has not watched the Dog Whisperer before but is having troubles with her dog’s behavior. Her friends recommend watching the show, so she does.
She catches on to the main premise very quickly, and starts to try the techniques out on her dog, with amazing results. Here is an excerpt:
Next, I was inspired by an episode of the Dog Whisperer in which Millan helped people with a dog that constantly ran out the front door. Again the fix was simple. Millan stood in front of the door, opened it, and when the dog came running he put up an index finger and said, “Sssstttt.” The dog stopped as if hit by a taser. This will never work for Sasha, I thought. The next morning I opened the front door wide and Sasha came running. But instead of tackling her and grabbing her collar as I usually would, this time I stood in front of the open door, held up my index finger and said, “Sssstttt.” She sat.
I shut the door and called my husband and daughter. I repeated the process, and as Sasha sat, looking at me as if awaiting instruction, my husband exclaimed, “It’s a miracle!”
I think the reason Cesar Milan’s techniques worked so well for the author is that she adopts the pack-leader attitude so well.
