Outwitting Dogs
Book Review:

I just got done reading Outwitting Dogs
, by Terry Ryan and Kirsten Mortensen. This is a fantastic book for anyone who needs any help with their dog’s behavior.
The book covers just about anything that you would want to know about training your dog: housebreaking, chewing, bad manners, pulling on the leash, barking, aggression, leaving your dog home alone, children and dogs, and much more. It is written in a very friendly and accessible way. It does not just tell you what to do, but also why. It explains why your dog behaves the way he does.
The authors get you to think about how you want your dog to behave in various situations, because this is a choice and can be different for every person. Then, once you know what you want, the book shows you how to achieve it. The ideas are very practical, because they work with your dog’s nature instead of against it.
It is packed with information, but it is not at all dry — it is very easy to read. I think it is an excellent reference book. I learned quite a lot from it, and I am sure I will be referring to it in the future as needed.
This is definitely the best book on dog behavior and training that I have read, and I highly recommend it.
By the way, one of the authors, Kirsten Mortensen, has a blog at KirstenMortensen.com.
