Pet Name Generator

1000 Dog Names : From A to ZHere’s an interesting way to find a name for your dog — use this Pet Name Search Engine.

You input dog or cat, male or female, and then select from a list of categories such as Art and Literature, Cartoons, History, Food, even Beanie Babies. The search will then come up with a list of names and their meanings or where they came from.

You can search for a single name, pairs (like Bambi and Thumper), or by first letter of the name.

You can also generate lists of the top 20, 40, or 60 names for the United States, Australia, or New Zealand. The top 20 dog names for the USA are:

Max, Jake, Buddy, Maggie, Bear, Molly, Bailey, Shadow, Sam, Lady, Sadie, Lucky, Rocky, Lucy, Daisy, Buster, Casey, Cody, Brandy, Duke

The site also has a list of tips for picking a pet name:

  • Choose a name that?s both easy to call out and one that you are happy calling out. Calling out “Jack” or “Zoe” in the park may be far less embarrassing than calling out than “Death Breath”.
  • For dogs avoid names that sound like the standard commands of No, Stay, Sit, Come, Down or Fetch. For example “Joe” is probably too close to “No”. It can be difficult for dogs to tell the difference between similar sounding words.
  • If choosing a long name keep in mind the shortened version. A long name will inevitably be shortened, but it may ruin the effect that you were originally looking for.

Where do they get all this information? They are in the pet ID tag business!

“Death Breath”, hahaha… that’s great! :p Actually the kind of name some of my friends would give to their pets, and it can’t be worse than the names that were almost given to Vulcain and his siblings (the owner being a pharmacist… hello, Viagra, Valium, Vicodin!). Fortunately we “woke up” in time on their naming day!

Good thing you woke up in time! I can imagine the reaction if you called out some of those names! :)

Actually the original owners of my dog named her “Cream Puff”. I like “Shelley” a lot better. Otherwise I would get hungry every time I called her!
