Teach Your Dog to Dance

Dancing With Dogs: A Step-By-Step Guide to Freestyle Click!Have you heard about the newest dog activity? It is dancing with your dog, also called canine freestyle.

I just read about this at the Belleville News-Democrat website.

Started in Canada and now spreading around the globe, it is a choreographed routine, set to music, between human and hound. Some hope it will eventually be accepted as an Olympic sport.

And why not?

In a few short years, it has grown to boast an international organization, 17 clubs in places from Wisconsin to Australia — including at least three in Florida — and an estimated 7,500 human practitioners with at least an equal number of dogs. And that’s not counting the couples who pirouette in the privacy of their own living rooms and never tell anyone.

Next month, the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show will include a canine freestyle demonstration, a sign that even the stodgiest of dog institutions has granted a degree of acceptance.

Go ahead and snicker. Dog dancers don’t care. They’re having too much fun.

(Sorry, this article is no longer online.)

The article says it is very difficult to train your dog to do this. I can imagine, as I am still working on “Sit” and “Stay” with my dog. But they say it is very addictive.

I really would like to see this dog dancing in action, wouldn’t you? I bet it would be fun to watch. Kind of like figure skating — I know I could never do it, but I love to watch.
